Early meteor from the Geminid swarm lights up Minnesota night skies, freaking out a lot of people!

The night sky over northern Minnesota suddenly turned into daylight as a brilliant fireball meteor plunged to earth on Friday, Dec. 11.

Police and the National Weather Service received numerous phone calls from frightened and/or perplexed people who had no idea about what might have caused the burst of light.

Meteorologists and astronomers are certain it was a meteor — and most likely an early Geminid — which are an annual meteor shower which occurs at this time of year and peaks on Dec. 13.
